Late C18th London Violin
Late C18th London violin (Dickenson, Barton?) - No label or other markings.
Stainer style arching. Quite wide grained front.
Curly ff holes.
Painted purfling, beautifully done on back, but painted on the front by less skilled hand.
Beautiful one-piece back with tight flame. Wonderful gold/orange/amber coloured varnish.
Neck graft.
Delightful scroll with pin pricks still visible marking the centre line.
Remains of dowel in top block.
Elevation raised.
Plentiful original varnish.
Restorations to front, but not bass bar or soundpost.
LOB: 358mm
What a delight to play. Most surprising for a full fat Staineresque violin. Powerful, full tone with plenty more to come - lovely deep almost viola like sound to lower strings.
