Rare Scottish violin most likely by Peter Hardie mid C19th
Rare Scottish violin mid 19th century. Probably Peter Hardie (Perthshire c1850, no relation to M Hardie). No label or other markings.
Stainer style arching. Quite wide grained front.
Curly ff holes.
Painted purfling, beautifully done on back, but re-painted on front at a later date by less skilled hand.
Beautiful one-piece back with tight flame. Wonderful gold/orange/amber coloured varnish.
Neck graft.
Delightful scroll with pin pricks still visible marking the centre line.
Blocks/linings pine, linings butted to corners - grain direction of lower/top blocks contrary to normal Cremonese design.
Remains of dowel in top block.
Elevation raised.
Plentiful original varnish.
Restorations to front, but not bass bar or soundpost.
LOB: 358mm
What a delight to play. Most surprising for a full fat Staineresque violin. Powerful, full tone with plenty more to come - lovely deep almost viola like sound to lower strings.
